This is my experience which I hope will motivate others also. I’m what experts would call ‘skinny fat’ as I have excess fat only in some places, however, I aim to change all that by going public.

I started kickboxing at home on the date recorded on the video and just had a workout, it was brilliant! :)

I read that many diet programs actually introduce more toxins to your body by recommending highly processed foods that are full of sodium, artificial colors, artificial flavors and food additives. Many of those programs don’t focus on nutrition or helping your body to heal.

We examine the evidence behind the health claims of 10 of the most popular so-called superfoods.

So-called, because in fact there is no official definition of a superfood and the EU has banned the use of the word on packaging.

But that hasn’t stopped many food brands from funding academics to research the health benefits of their product.

The food industry wants to persuade us that eating some foods can slow down the ageing process, lift depression, boost our physical ability and even our intelligence.

The problem is that most research on superfoods tests chemicals and extracts in concentrations not found in the food in its natural state.

Garlic, for example, contains a nutrient believed to help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. But you’d have to eat up to 28 cloves a day to match the doses used in the lab – something no researcher has yet been brave enough to try.

Foods that have been elevated to superfood status in recent years include those rich in antioxidants (such as beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, E, flavanoids and selenium) and omega-3 fatty acids.

Antioxidants are chemicals thought to protect against the harmful effects of free radicals, which are chemicals naturally produced in every living cell and known to cause cell damage.

However, evidence about the health benefits of antioxidants is far from conclusive and there is evidence that antioxidant supplements may be harmful (PDF, 2.71Mb).

While the miracle food remains a fantasy, it’s pretty well established that obesity and alcohol are the two most common causes of major long-term illness and an increased risk of premature death.

Importance of a balanced diet
Diet plays an important role in our health, but there is concern that too much focus on individual foods may encourage unhealthy eating.

“No food, including those labelled ‘superfoods’, can compensate for unhealthy eating,” explains Alison Hornby, a dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association (BDA).

“If people mistakenly believe they can ‘undo’ the damage caused by unhealthy foods by eating a superfood, they may continue making routine choices that are unhealthy and increase their risk of long-term illness.”

An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons or hydrogen from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions. When the chain reaction occurs in a cell, it can cause damage or death to the cell. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions. They do this by being oxidized themselves, so antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols, ascorbic acid, or polyphenols.


Substituted phenols and derivatives of phenylenediamine are common antioxidants used to inhibit gum formation in gasoline (petrol).
Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging; plants and animals maintain complex systems of multiple types of antioxidants, such as glutathione, vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases. Insufficient levels of antioxidants, or inhibition of the antioxidant enzymes, cause oxidative stress and may damage or kill cells. Oxidative stress is damage to cell structure and cell function by overly reactive oxygen-containing molecules and chronic excessive inflammation. Oxidative stress seems to play a significant role in many human diseases, including cancers. The use of antioxidants in pharmacology is intensively studied, particularly as treatments for stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. For these reasons, oxidative stress can be considered to be both the cause and the consequence of some diseases.
Antioxidants are widely used in dietary supplements and have been investigated for the prevention of diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and even altitude sickness. Although initial studies suggested that antioxidant supplements might promote health, later large clinical trials with a limited number of antioxidants detected no benefit and even suggested that excess supplementation with certain putative antioxidants may be harmful Antioxidants also have many industrial uses, such as preservatives in food and cosmetics and to prevent the degradation of rubber and gasoline.

Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin A, C & E are the primary sources of antioxidants, but when you can’t reach for the fruits or vegetables, you need a supplement substitute. :)

How to Control Mindless Eating

1. Do you always eat in front of the TV when your favourite programme is on, even when you have already eaten?

2. When you’re happy, sad or bored do you reach for food?

3. Do you wait to feel hunger before you eat or eat because it’s time to?

4. When you’re full do you still aim to finish what’s on your plate?

5. Do you pay attention to what you’re eating and take the time to understand the nutritional value of it?

6. Do you find yourself picking at food all day?

7. Are you ever aware of your food portions?

Now you know what mindless eating is, how do you control it? These are some proven ways on how to control mindless eating:

1. Learn to eat only when you’re hungry and not because your favourite program is on;

2. If you’re happy, sad or bored, deal with it. Celebrate with something other than food; cry, talk to someone who can help or do both; look for an activity to entertain or occupy yourself other than eating.

3. Eat smaller portions and drink lots of water before and after food.

4. Learn the nutritional value of foods you eat;
