Today I had the privilege of presenting the above topic at my church before a varied audience. I endeavoured to keep my presentation short to allow time for questions and answers and we had a few good ones. Also, it was great to get insight and other perspectives regarding attitudes to investing.
About my investment journey: When I set up Love Nurture in October 2003 to help build stronger families by connecting them back to God, I quickly discovered that lack of money was a big problem or cause for concern for a lot of couples, including myself. So, I committed myself to learn what I needed to offer practical help. This is when I decided to get a financial education which led me to read books like, ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ and quickly followed by ‘CashFlow Quadrant’ both by Robert Kiyosaki. However, they weren’t the only personal development books I read, I read several others including Secrets of the Millionaire Mind (currently free to download) by T Harv Eker and the book by Dale Carnegie, ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’.
I also attended several business events over the years and heard from several skilled speakers in their field who taught me some of the skills I have today. I also committed myself to learning and training under specific mentors in my area of interest which has led me to where I am today.
All these books, training events, online courses and mentors showed me how to think rich to be rich and amazingly, I found they all seem to apply biblical principles.
What I’ve learnt I have applied consistently, now I’m proficient in the area of trading the markets when it comes to investments so much so, that a quick look at a chart can tell me if a trade will be profitable or not. Recently, I have been 100% accurate as recent trades went up 188 points or pips in profit.
First what is an investment?
My audience came up with a few good answers. However, we did look at some definitions from my earlier Google search.
Definition: An investment is an asset or item acquired with the goal of generating income or appreciation. In an economic sense, an investment is the purchase of goods that are not consumed today but are used in the future to create wealth.
…the action or process of investing money for profit.
“a debate over private investment in road-building”
Synonyms: investing, speculation; expenditure, outlay, funding, backing, financing, underwriting; buying shares.
What kind of Investment should you have?
Again my audience came up with a few good examples.
I mentioned trading which is trading stocks and shares and I shared references I found in the bible. Examples are:-
- 2 Kings 4:1-7 – Buying and selling (oil is actually listed on the stock market).
- Matthew 25: 14-30 – Talks about duplicating what you have and investing with bankers vs 27.
Quick question, What do bankers do with people’s money? It’s called leverage, which means banks use borrowed capital for (an investment), expecting the profits made to be greater than the interest payable.
Why should you invest?
We came up with a few good examples we could all agree on. Also we agreed it should be at least 8 according to Ecclesiastes 11 :1 and 2.
Reasons to invest
Amongst the several reasons listed were:
- Not to be enslaved by debt;
- To leave an inheritance to our children and grandchildren;
- Money solves all your financial problems;
- To be able to live a good life;
- To help our community;
- To help our family and loved ones;
- To glorify God by being able to fund his work.
Can you come up with a few more? Please add them in the comment box below.
Who is it for?
According to Proverbs 13:22 , it’s for parents and anyone with a plan to execute, according to Luke 14:28-35.
This would include Churches and other communities who want to benefit from a common purse. I am aware this has been abused and the bible warns against being enticed by sinners in Proverbs 1. However, Jesus and the new testament disciples put it in context when they showed how it should be used for the benefit of all members of the body of Christ, see John 13: 29 and Acts 2:45 and 4:32.
